…must come to an end. Had a great week down near Gearhart on the coast of Oregon. The week consisted of eating, reading, building sand castles, jumping waves, watching movies, playing games, and more eating. It was VERY difficult to get to work this morning!
My family finally convinced me that I need to read the Harry Potter books so I read the first four and watched the three movies that are out over the week as well. (I just started book five as well.) It was great to see Andy and Katie again as it has been quite a while. Good times with the family were had by all, too bad it couldn’t have been two weeks. Oh well.
I will follow with pictures sometime.
This will probably be a slow week for me as I have a bunch to do (including pack for a camping trip this weekend). Four things to be aware of if you are in the Seattle area:
August 17th: The Pale Pacifc has a show at The Catwalk.
August 18th: Late Tuesday has a show at The Crocodile Cafe along with del Sol.
August 21st: Late Tuesday’s Jocelyn will be performing with Aaron Sprinkle and Sherri Youngward at The Q Cafe as part of “Round 3″ (see my post on “Round 2″).
August 24th: John Van Deusen has a show at Bethany Covenant Church (Mount Vernon) with The OC Supertones.
See the respective websites for more details.
Also, what the heck? I am gone for a week and Jews are leaving Gaza? Wow am I out of the loop!

Well folks, I am headed down to the Oregon coast with my family for a week of sitting in the sun, playing in the sand, building sand castles, reading, eating, playing games, and whatever else we can came up with. I hope you will take a look at the MattJonesBlog Archive Page and look for previous posts that might interest you. Also, check out the Tags and Categories Page if you are interested in particular categories. Have a great week and feel free to comment on anything and I will respond when I get back.
One other thing, I am trying to setup a new home page and an astronomy page. If you have a moment, please head over to astro.mattjonesblog.com and home.mattjonesblog.com and offer any feedback and suggestions as you can! It would be greatly appreciated!
Shalom

This week’s picture comes to us from the constellation Lyra.

This is the Ring Nebula also known as M57. This planetary nebula resides in our own Milky Way Galaxy approximately 2300 light years away. The picture at right shows the inner rings (and central dying white dwarf star) at approximately 1 light year across. Both images are false color with the bluer colors representing higher temperature gas and the red representing cooler gas (as the gas moves farther away from the central star, it cools down).
The top image is able to show a few very interesting features. One is that the hydrogen gas rings actually continue to quite a far distance (that the image at right does not show). Two is that the composite image is also able to show a field of galaxies that reside beyond the ring nebula (as well as our own Milky Way). One to especially note is galaxy IC 1296 with its spiral arms clearly visible. Looking at the larger view of the top image (both are clickable for larger versions), you can clearly make out numerous faint galaxies. IC 1296 resides about 200 million light years away.

Last night (August 5th, 2005) Jason Harrod, singer/songwriter from North Carolina, performed over at Seattle’s Zoka Cafe. Greg, Chad, and I help out with setting up the sound system. We were quite professional… (read: we had very little clue. Even had to resort to calling Dan for help.) Jason showed up and played a great show highlighting many of the songs off his new album, Bright as You. I must say that I enjoy the new stuff, but prefer his acoustic versions to the studio verions (for the most part). The crowd at Zoka’s was one of the best I have seen in a while, everyone was really into the music and there was a pretty good size crowd so that was pretty cool. After the show we packed up and invited Jason back to Greg and Angie’s for some midnight smoothies. Jason is quite a nice guy, I think good times were had by all.
Last time Jason was at the Greenlake Zoka (July 26, 2003), we were able to record the performance. If you want to listen to the live cuts (including songs from the new album) head over to my Jason Harrod Live page. You can also read a review and hear some tracks from Harrod and Funck’s self titled album at my Harrod and Funck post. Check it out, lots of good stuff! Also, stop by Jason’s webpage for info on concerts, his bio, his music, and his mailing list.

Baltimore Orioles All-Star 1st baseman was headed down the road to Cooperstown but then seemed to take a U-turn. Not only does the evidence seem to suggest that Rafael Palmeiro took the powerful “performance-enhancing” steroid stanozolol, but it seems back on March 17th he lied about it before a congressional panel by saying “I have never used steroids. Period.“
Yeah, he screwed himself. Now I don’t completely understand why there are congressional hearings that deal with baseball (don’t they have better things to do?), but regardless, Palmeiro may have committed perjury. Tom Davis said in an interview that “as a practical matter, perjury referrals are uncommon, prosecutions are rare. But this is a high-profile case, so I think it will get an honest look-see.” It doesn’t look good for Raf who recently got his 3000th hit (at a Mariners game that I was at, see picture below) joining hall of famers Aaron, Mays, and Murray as the only players with that hit count and 500 home runs.
Palmeiro has said that he stands by his testimony to Congress and that he has no idea how the drug got into his system. That seems a bit suspect to me. How do you not know you have ingested a powerful drug? I hope, for Palmeiro’s sake, that he didn’t actually take the drug and he will be let off the hook. If not, at wrose he could go to jail/pay fine for perjury and at best be banned from Cooperstown (I would assume). Time will tell I suppose.

Rafael doubles off the Mariners’ Joel Pineiro for his 3000th hit and his team joins him at 2nd for celebration. Seems a bit tainted now, doesn’t it?

Erin seems to keep introducing me to good music. And apparently there is a lot of good music coming out of Bellingham (Late Tuesday, John Van Deusen ,The Pale Pacific).
I have been enjoying The Pale for the past few weeks now. I first heard Gabe alone (at “Round 2″ at the Q Cafe with Dana of Late Tuesday) and enjoyed his guitar, rhodes, and voice stylings (as well as his humerous banter). I still have not heard the band play live (was a day late for Woodsong) but look forward to their upcoming tour for the relase of their new CD (out August 23rd) Urgency (they hit Seattle on August 17th). They are a really nice group of guys and I hoep for the best for them! Stop by their site and check out their stuff.
And now for a few tunes off their third album gravity gets things done:
how to fit in (3.11MB):
here’s the mystery of fitting in, the drama of acceptance with the pretty girls and tough guys. it’s easy to see why i’m so stressed out. there’s forms to fill and fees to pay if you want to belong. there’s a right way to talk, hand shakes, smiles, and the inside jokes. i feel so left out when the punch line hits – it comes in so fast, and i’m so slow. i guess i don’t understand. i’m so confused. i guess i don’t understand. ’cause you come in so fast, and i’m so slow. i tell myself that with friends like you who needs friends at all. i’m fine with me and my ideas. but i still feel alone. they roll their eyes, i know just what that means. and it hangs in the air now over my head. it comes in so fast, and i’m so slow. i guess i don’t understand. i’m so confused. i guess i don’t understand. ’cause you come in so fast, and i’m so slow. and all i want is to belong. but do i want to fit in with you?
gravity gets things done (3.56MB)
wake-up call (3.79MB)
Enjoy!
