Well, I’m updating my blog. Granted, it’s due to a death threat I received from my friend Nicole. She very literally said that if I didn’t update my blog that she would buy the next plane ticket to Skagway and personally release a farm of angry Argentine Ants into my bed. She had threaten to release angry Argentineans into my bed, which is decidedly more upsetting (especially if they are soccer fans). However, due to cut-backs in her torture budget, she was unable to come through on that threat. So, here’s my first update in a while and I will most likely work backwards to update on things that have already happened.
On July 3rd, Ian, Severin, and I were the recipients of a free heli-tour of the Ferebee Glacier via Temsco Tours. It was an amazing trip. It was my first time to fly in a helicopter and it was an absolute blast; it made me want to become a pilot. We flew over the western side of the Lynn Canal and over Face Mountain (Kanagoo Mt.) passing some amazing scenery, which I can only describe as a sea of mountains.
Upon landing the chopper on the glacier, we were allowed to get out, but weren’t allowed to wander much. It’s understandable, a little curiosity could create a huge disaster out there. The glacial mulans we were walking around (like the one I’m standing over above) had depths of up to 400 or more feet and were full of freezing cold snow melt. Other mulans were large enough for a person to easy fall down into (pictured left). When the mulan reaches the bedrock, the water will then rush out and it will become what is called a crevasse.
At that point we were hustled back onto the next helicopter back to Skagway and sent home. That was a terrific finish to our 4th of July weekend and we topped it off with a little ice cold pseudo-polar bear swimming near the top of the White Pass. It was so cold that my fingers were tingling and numb. :) It was painful at first, but once my nerve endings were sufficiently frozen, I couldn’t feel much. I think the water up there was about 45 degrees, maybe less. So wonderful! “Summer time is hear!” was our cry.
