Google Calendar and Some Shows

April 18th, 2006 4 comments

Google CalendarGoogle has finally come out with Google Calendar! MS Outlook has been ok to use, but I have been waiting for Google Calendar for a long time. Now we have access to our calendar from anywhere we have a net connection. It is extremely easy to add events, invite guests, and have reminders sent. I am really excited about this! (Is that sad?)

Also, there are a few shows this weekend to check out. Friday the 21st you will have to choose between Tara Ward (of Late Tuesday) and Joe Day (of Mindhead) playing @ the Q Cafe at 8:00pm (doors at 7:30, $6) OR The Lonely Forest CD release show @ the Crocodile Cafe at 9:00pm ($7) along with Shim, Mooncalf, and David Bavas & The Down Comforter. VERY tough decision. Lonely Forest at the Croc will rock for sure and I think I will probably end up there. It sounds like they will be playing right at 9:00pm, if they play later (say 10ish) I will probably try and catch some of Tara and Joe’s show. If you do want to hear both of the shows, you could catch Tara and Joe Friday night and then see The Lonely Forest on Saturday night up in Bellingham @ The Bakerview (I think that is at Christ the King church) at 8:00pm ($10door/$8adv) along with Mates of State and Viva Voce. Good music folks, check it out!

Desktop Earth

While surfing BlogMad (if you want to be invited, let me know), I came across Damien’s Blog who linked to a cool desktop background program called Desktop Earth. This cool app puts a “live” image of the globe on your desktop and if you have a broadband connection it will even put in real “live” (actually about 3-6 hour delay) cloud cover. I have always dug the night images of the earth too. Check it out!

Talk.Google

Google TalkGoogle has finally released their Instant Messaging product called Google Talk you can find it and download it at Talk.Google.com. So far it looks pretty easy to use, of course there is no one to talk to yet! Another thing that Google has done is add a useful voice communications as well. I know that AIM has some limited capabilities, but don’t think it works too well. It will be interested to see if a free Google Talk client will be able to compete with other VoIP companies like Vonage. Free voice communications all over the world, sounds pretty good to me! If you already have a Gmail account, your are ready to start Google Talk. If you want a Gmail account, let me know and I can invite you. So head over to Talk.Google.com, download, and send me a message at matt510 [at] gmail [dot] com!

Also, be sure to update your Earth.Google program as they have updated some of the imagery. Some cities have been upgraded down to 6inches / pixel. Pretty amazing! If you haven’t seen Google Earth yet, go do it now!

And one final note from Google, Print.Google has been put slightly on hold while they give publishers time to decided if/how they want their books included. I still cannot imagine why any publisher would not want to be included in this database as it will increase their visibility and get people interested in their products. This will also be a huge resource for libraries and education centers. Get on the boat people! In the meantime, head over to Google Print to browse what books they do have. If you want to know what Google Print is, either read my post on Print.Google or go to their info page.

Google Earth

Google continues to amaze me. They also continue to increase the amount of time I waste!

Regent by SatelliteEarth.Google is a piece of software that I have been trying to download for a while now, but because of heavy use, haven’t been able to. But they seemed to have opened downloads up again (I would get it while you can!). Google has combined their massive search database with their Local.Google search engine, their Maps.Google mapping engine, and numerous satellite databases (including the always impressive Digital Globe).

This is some cool software, plain and simple. I can’t even begin to describe all the features it has! One of the more fun things to do is to “fly” from one location to another on a particular route. You can map and get directions as you can on Maps.Google but with being able to see the exact physical route with roads highlighted. You can also automatically point out gas stations or malls or numerous other landmarks. My description doesn’t really do it justice. Not only is it fun to explore, it is also a great educational tool as there are information links all over the place! Go download it, you will be addicted!

Go download Google Earth! Enjoy!

Also, Sinceretheory has pointed out that Google will also work as a currency converter. I really think they are taking over the world (along with Firefox). I wish I had money to buy their stock!

Shalom
